Reduction Cooled Ware

My work is hand built from flat slabs of clay. The textures are created using custom CNC milled stamps. The work is wood fired and then reduction cooled. Reduction cooling is the process of firing the kiln down in a reduction atmosphere after reaching temperature. This down firing creates an oxygen starved flame that begins to burn the oxygen molecules contained within the iron in the clays. This chemically changes the iron, providing deep rich, reds, metallic copper, bronze and black colors. It can also cause the wood ash to sparkle as if the work was sprinkled with sugar.
